Sheriff's Department Expanding Digital Radio System Countywide
CHICAGO, Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The Cook County Sheriff's Department today announced that staging of the first three phases of its new Motorola (NYSE: MOT) 800 MHz ASTRO® SmartZone® digital two-way radio communications system has been completed and a portion shipped to local sites for installation. The hardware and software were staged at Motorola's Customer's Center for Systems Integration (CCSI) in Schaumburg, Ill. (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20010226/CGM037 ) These initial phases of the new system include 15 sites and are part of a $25 million expansion of the sheriff's department communications capability originally announced by Sheriff Michael Sheahan in 1998. The new ASTRO digital communications system is an augmentation of the system currently being used by Cook County Department of Corrections personnel working at the Cook County Jail at 26th Street and California Avenue in Chicago. When the entire system is installed, it also will serve the Cook County Sheriff's Police, Court Services and other county personnel working throughout Cook County. "The new expanded system not only will provide the Sheriff's Department the geographic coverage it needs countywide, but also ensure communications interoperability that is critical in emergencies that often require responses from multiple Cook County agencies," said Sheriff Sheahan. "The system also will provide the Sheriff's Department communications interoperability with systems used by many suburban public-safety departments." The new 800 MHz trunked radio communications system will have the capability to operate in mixed mode. This capability will provide the Sheriff's Department the flexibility to use either analog or digital radios. The system also is compliant with the Common Air Interface portion of the Project 25 standard for public-safety digital radios. Project 25 is the functional and technical standard for public-safety digital systems adopted in 1995 by a consortium of two-way radio user groups to ensure that public-safety personnel would be able to communicate directly with each other. Prior to shipment for installation, the new Cook County system was tested at Motorola's CCSI. The staging process includes inventory and testing of system components provided by Motorola and its suppliers. This helps ensure that components meet Motorola quality standards, are compatible with other components included in the system and meet customer requirements. About Motorola Motorola, Inc.
