County Accepts Motorola-Designed Public Safety Communications System
ATHENS, Ga., Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Athens-Clarke County today announced that the county's Fire and Emergency Services Department has formally accepted Motorola (NYSE: MOT) MOSCAD™ Fire Station Alerting and MOSCAD siren control systems, becoming the first fire and emergency services department in the country to integrate both systems into the same workstation. The two MOSCAD systems will operate over the county's recently accepted Motorola SMARTNET® two-way radio communications backbone. Wendell Faulkner, chief of the county's Fire and Emergency Services Department, said the integrated, simulcast voice radio and signaling system will significantly enhance the agency's wireless communications capabilities in the county just east of Atlanta. It will include the ability to dispatch firefighters and monitor their response while simultaneously controlling and monitoring the siren warning systems. "The speed and reliability of this new system will enable us to reduce our response time in emergencies, a substantial benefit for the county's 95,000 residents, including students at the University of Georgia," said Chief Faulkner. The new MOSCAD Fire Station Alerting System enables dispatchers to transmit automated commands to all fire stations simultaneously and communicate to firefighters within seconds after sending the alerts. The system provides an escalating tone pre-alert to the stations involved in the emergency response, automatically opens fire station doors and turns on station lights. The system also provides dispatchers the capability to remotely monitor and close the fire station doors. The new Motorola MOSCAD siren control system enables dispatchers to send out pre-recorded messages or make live public address announcements right from the dispatch console, as well as activate the sirens to broadcast their usual alert tones. "Operating the voice and alerting systems from the same PC also saves precious dispatch center space without compromising the functionality of either system," said Chief Faulkner. Many county agencies and departments already are using the new communications system including police, sheriff, emergency medical services, public utilities, corrections, transit, transportation, public works, airport, building inspection, central services, leisure services, planning and solid waste. The three-site, eight-channel integrated voice and alerting systems replace the county's conventional VHF voice communications system. The county also is using five Motorola CENTRACOM™ CRT dispatch workstations and Motorola MTS 2000™ portable and MCS 2000® mobile radios. "This is an exciting first for both Athens-Clarke County and Motorola," said Dick Rigsbee, Motorola vice president. "The integrated system will be a model solution for counties across the United States looking to manage their resources in the best way possible as they expand and update their emergency communications systems."
