Raton Accepts New Motorola Communications System
BOCA RATON, Fla., Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The city of Boca Raton today formally accepted a $4.5 million Motorola (NYSE: MOT) 800 MHz ASTRO® SmartZone™ mixed mode (digital and analog) trunked communications system, purchased as part of a shared system with the South Palm Beach County Communications Cooperative. The announcement was made at special ceremonies also marking the grand opening of the Police Fire Communications Center located at Municipal Services, 2500 NW 1st Avenue, in Boca Raton. The $10.3 million shared countywide system will provide vital communications interoperability between the cities of Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Boynton Beach and with Palm Beach County. For the first time, public- safety personnel in Boca Raton, including police and fire departments as well as local government agencies, will be able to communicate directly with neighboring cities and Palm Beach County agencies, including the Sheriff's Office and Fire Rescue, city communications officials said. "The Boca Raton system's interoperability with the neighboring Delray Beach and Boynton Beach systems will help us provide a more timely response to our area's service needs," said Hugh McCaffrey, director of the Motorola Boca Raton Communications Center for the city of Boca Raton. "By working together to develop this shared solution, we'll all be able to more effectively handle emergency situations that invariably require multiple agencies to respond." Boca Raton, with a population of 68,000 people, is the second largest city in Palm Beach County and is located just north of Fort Lauderdale on the Atlantic Coast. The city's new single-site, 10-channel communications system uses a four-position Motorola CENTRACOM Gold Series Elite™ console installed at the newly built Police Fire Communications Center. A total of 995 mobile and portable radios are part of the system, including ASTRO Spectra® digital, LCS 2000® , ASTRO XTS 3000™ digital and LTS 2000® radios. "This sophisticated communications system is the direct result of the dedicated efforts of Palm Beach County, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach and Boca Raton officials who joined forces to find an effective solution for the entire county," said Dick Rigsbee, Motorola vice president. "The technology included in this system provides Boca Raton with the features and capabilities it will need to address changing communications needs for many years to come. We are very pleased to have been part of this historic process." About Motorola Motorola, Inc.
