Motorola Announce the First Fully Comprehensive Radio Communications System for
a U.S. Transit Agency
WASHINGTON, Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- In an agreement that is a first for a major U.S. transit agency, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) today announced the signing of a major business initiative with Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) to install a new Comprehensive Radio Communications System for the Agency's police, bus, rail and maintenance departments. The implementation of the fully integrated 490MHz Comprehensive Radio Communications System designed to provide Metro with a complete radio communications system for the Metro Transit Police Department, bus, rail and maintenance will be in place by the end of 2002. Above and below ground infrastructure testing for the new system should begin by next spring. "This agreement with an industry leader in communications technology will improve Metro's bottom line and transform the agency into a sound, employee-focused enterprise for the 21st century," said Richard A. White, Metro's General Manager. "When this project is completed, Metro will be the first U.S. transit agency to implement a comprehensive and integrated radio communications system for police, bus, rail and maintenance personnel." As part of the $60 million contract, the Radio Communications System will put to use state-of-the-art technology that is engineered to provide clearer, more dependable voice communications for the transit agency. "Our innovative digital solution is designed to help Metro enhance its communications among key personnel and continue to be a premier transport provider." In addition to the sophisticated ASTRO® voice communications system capability the new system provides, it also includes a data communications system for bus and police, a wider area of communications coverage, increased operational flexibility and higher reliability. The new system will provide full coverage of the entire Metro service area in the District, Maryland and Northern Virginia. The new communications system also will allow Metro to replace its current aging system and equipment which is difficult to maintain. One main component of the new system will include new user equipment featuring more than 1,900 Motorola XTS 3000™ portable radios for police, operations supervisory personnel and maintenance personnel; more than 3,000 ASTRO and Spectra(TM) mobile radios for bus and rail maintenance personnel; more than 50 Motorola Mobile Workstation 520 (MW520) terminals which will allow Transit Police direct access to state and federal crime databases from motor vehicles, and over 2,000 pagers for maintenance and operations personnel. The new system also will include 29 Motorola CENTRACOM Gold Elite™ dispatch consoles. Motorola, Inc. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) was created by an interstate compact in 1967 to plan, develop, build, finance and operate a balanced regional transportation system in the national capital area.
